* "Up in the hills on a Kentucky night" - Wait I minute..... This is supposed to be a bio about who is Whiskey Fungus, not what is Whiskey Fungus. Even though these stories appear to be intertwined at the moment, they are two entirely different stories. Let's try and set the stage for this story again!
Out in the cold on a Minnesota night (that's more like it) in the early 1980's, 2 young lads were loading band gear into converted school buses while navigating the waters of trying to earn a living in what was then, a thriving music scene. Our 2 young lads, Joe & Todd knew of each other, however were playing in separate bands, Explorer and Diver. Meanwhile, the 3rd lad in this story Greg, was running amok in Chicago developing his chops with the Cole House Rhythm & Blues band. By fate in the mid 80's, Joe & Todd would connect to form what has become a lifelong musical kinship & play in the bands Backtalk, Shakedown and the now infamous Ragg City Madd Dogs! And, if anybody is wondering.....Yes, there may have been some Hair Metal covers played during that time to make a buck (gotta love the 80's!!) During that period of time Greg journeyed off to California to live on the beach and play with a band called Ariel for 3 years. Greg then returned to Minnesota to continue his musical journey with local bands Tempted and Generation Gap. Even though all 3 gentlemen were making a living playing other people's songs, there was always the pipe dream of writing original music. Back then, little did they know.......
* "Sits barrels full of whiskey aging just right" - It was during the late 1980,s that Joe & Todd took a fateful vacation through Lynchburg & Nashville, Tennessee. It was there in the land of aging whiskey that our prodigal lad Joe made the decision to take his talents to Nashville. Thus began an adventure for Joe that lasted 19 years and enabled him to write music, form lasting musical friendships/connections and ultimately tour with national recording artists Antsy McLain and the Trailer Park Troubadours. Not to mention start a family! Meanwhile, Greg & Todd were in Minnesota raising their families & playing clubs in what had become a dwindling music scene. Alas, Todd missed his friend Joe, However, little did he know.......
* "Fugitive Emissions escaped though the air" - Like the Angels share that escapes from a barrel of whiskey, our prodigal lad Joe had also decided it was time to leave Tennessee and move back to Minnesota to finish raising his family. Upon returning, Joe reconnected with Todd. As always, their friendship turned to music with Joe drawing from his endless library of riffs on his acoustic guitar and Todd responding with "Seriously dude, is that yours?" . As it was meant to be, with Joe providing the music & Todd writing the lyrics, our lads began the process of writing the material that would become Fugitive Emissions. However, the 2 lads were stuck..... Where do we go with this? And more importantly, where can we find a like-minded bass player to help us finish our task?? As if it came straight out of a serendipitous novel, in sauntered our 3rd lad Greg to complete the Whiskey Fungus unit! Born on the exact same day as Todd and days apart from Joe, Greg became the perfect fit to complement a project that was starting to have a life of its own. As a group of newly formed kindred spirits, our lads began the tedious process of recording the newly written material. But they really didn't know.....
* "Over the years nobody seemed to care" - Well, Whiskey Fungus certainly hopes this isn't the case. They firmly believe that there is a place for grass roots, down to earth American music. Their debut album Fugitive Emissions reflects a lifetime of playing music, raising families, lessons learned & certainly a few courses from the school of hard knocks!! Whiskey Fungus would like to thank everyone in advance for checking out the new release & for coming out to see them live. Please come back and check the website and the linked social media platforms often for updates! And, in case anyone was wondering.........Yes, they still like their whiskey!!
